Difficult Roads Lead to Beautiful Destinations!
After SMILE Mass hosted a successful food and water drive to help the residents of Puerto Rico, we realized this was just a quick fix, and that so much more was needed! When an area is hit so hard by a natural disaster, the entire population is disabled, to some extent.
Did you know that Hurricane Maria made landfall on September 20, 2017, yet as of November 1:
- 1/3 of the households still lack running water
- 3 million people are still without power
- This US territory is struggling to keep its vulnerable populations alive as hospitals deal with the lack of power and low supplies of medication
- Of the 1,100 public schools, dozens were badly damaged, 190 are serving as community centers and more than 70 others are used to shelter families who lost their homes
With the help of Governor Chis Sununu of New Hampshire, SMILE Mass will be helping Puerto Rico rebuild a school. This school will service children both with and with out disabilities. Every child deserves the right for quality education.
This project needs a minimum of $250,000 and a lot of pro-bono workers.
